D O O M – R O O M: Boiler Room/ Red Stripe MAKE Session 001 with JUKE and Lex Records
Last night, JUKE and Lex Records took over Boiler Room at their new secretive east London HQ for the very first Red Stripe MAKE session.

The virtuoso ensemble of evening entertainment included legendary rapping mad villain DOOM, electronic experimentalist Boom Bip and the world’s nicest scratcher, Buddy Peace. Jneiro Jarel, the production-half of DOOM’s new JJ DOOM project couldn’t make it, possibly due to a cognac accident, but we still created a tasteful tele-musical alternative to the Brit Awards’ industry circle-jerk. DOOM’s elusive reputation didn’t disappoint as he arrived under cover of darkness for a mini-break in our most supportive office chair, about 30 minutes after his set time (standard – except for the little live stream element), tore our ears to pieces with a seriously eclectic set – and left in a flash, dropping expensive earplugs in his wake like some kind of beefy Hansel and Gretel motherfucker.

If you didn’t tune in to the live stream, you’re a n00b. If you did, you’d have seen a guy in a mask following up Dirty Beaches with Shabazz Palaces. Neat. If you were there in person, your hair stinks of weed today and you left all your worldly belongings on the night bus because you can’t be trusted with free beer – no, not even on a Tuesday.

BLACK STROBE are the original French house headbangers and without them, Justice would probably be ripping on Daft Punk’s style, dressed as a pair of giant vibrators. Following several dormant years, ‘Strobe return in 2012 with a slew of remix packages, before releasing a brand new album of their signature ‘frozen Balearic gay biker house’, on Black Strobe records later this year.

The first strobe hit to get a sonic facelift is 2003′s Italian Fireflies. Dropping on March 5th, its been touched up by six dance music luminaries although JUKE’s standout track is probably the thugged-out rework by Hot Natured’s Richy Ahmed and Wildkat Corey Taylor. Dust off those arseless leather chaps… ‘Strobe are back.

Jack stole our heart this Valentine’s Day, like some sort of indie Kevin Federline, with a glittery, hand-written audio card that turned our knees to jelly. Sadly, its neat handwriting suggests that a foxy press agent probably wrote it, but that doesn’t matter. It might be a mere soppy charade – but so are most relationships – and although we at JUKE bathe our cereal in moonshine and sleep in our cowboy boots, sometimes we just want some hugs and kisses – not drugs and bitches.

GROHL WITH IT: SOUND CITY DOCUMENTARY

Alt’s most lovable workaholic, aka Dave Grohl has been making a movie about Sound City Studios – the legendary LA recording studio that’s tattooed onto the very eyelids of rock ‘n roll folklore.

Over the past 40 years, at least one game-changing album has been recorded at Sound City every decade including Nirvana’s Nevermind, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors and Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled debut. Rumour also has it that a number of Sound City luminaries like Trent Reznor and Tom Petty are recording some sort of superstar soundtrack for the project.

Although one thing that isn’t mentioned in this 25-second teaser, which should probably carry an epilepsy warning, is that some absolute turkeys (like perennial rock doc talking head and honorary juggalo, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor) are involved too. But like anything Grohl-related, we’ll take the rough with the smooth.

Rather than call the lawyers who checked the fine print on Drake’s lucrative Degrassi contract, the Weeknd rubber-stamped the bootleg via tumblr and asked Shlomo to make the now official remix available for free download. So another broadband bromance blossoms… what is this, match.com?

Now, he’s teamed up with Built to Spill bassist, Brett Nelson, to reconceptualise Dinosaur Jr’s classic Tarpit, using only synths and drum machines for the Electronic Anthropology Project. The EAP is Nelson’s sonic concubine, where he translates famous rock records into ‘80s new wave and synth-pop. Tarpit, along with nine other digitised Dino-juvie songs will be released on Record Store Day (April 21st) on 500 limited edition pieces of purple vinyl – a format you might soon only be able to find in museums, next to the brontosaurs.

DJ Gothy Jeff paints a vivid picture in his multimedia mash up, Getting’ Witchy Wit It, of what would’ve happened had Will Smith’s life really been “flipped, turned upside down” by a stretch in a Russian gulag instead of a cushy extended holiday in Bel-Air.
Gothy J, the faceless alias of a secretive major ballin’ beatsmith, dubs Big Willy’s cookie cutter raps over productions by house witches SALEM, industrialists Chris & Cosey, G-emo Drake and hip-hopper in a half shell, Clams Casino.

Produced under Blake’s BET remix moniker, Harmonimix, it marks the beginning of Grammy winner D’Angelo’s high-profile comeback tour and the end of an 11-year spell in the musical wilderness, a period where he didn’t make a single live performance – and ate too many carbs.

Blake debuted the edit in a recent appearance on Radio 1 and it sounds a lot like the original would, from the bottom of a k-hole, or the inside of D’Angelo’s head when he offered an undercover NYPD policewoman $40 for a blowie back in 2k10.

Mike Miller’s photographic career started a couple of decades ago, snapping jazz virtuosos, scantily clad supermodels and the odd album cover. A shoot with Arabian Prince, one of NWA’s founding fathers, caught DJ Muggs’ attention and he subsequently asked Mike to do some shots for a Cypress Hill demo. Since then, Miller’s had intimate access to the lives of the West Coast’s premier pimps, G’s, and hustlers even.

His debut exhibition, West Coast Hip Hop – A History in Pictures, opens for a single weekend at LA’s Known Gallery this Saturday. Take a trip down memory lane, back to a time when super-star thugs played craps in the street in cute doo-rags, before Snoop traded his hood cred for frolics with gummy bears in Katy Perry videos, and when players hustled crack from the frontline instead of novelty fragrances from the front rows of Paris Fashion Week.

Rock ‘n roll may be fermenting in a retirement home, groaning for a nappy change, but its eff you ‘tude still thrives in Jennifer Herrema. In response to the critical assassination RTX (her post-Royal Trux project) received for their JJ Got Live RaTX album, she simply shrugged, “Fuck it, people are stupid. Let’s just change the name”. So RTX are now Black Bananas, dummy.

Although the band lineup remains exactly the same, their new album, Rad Times Xpress IV, is technically their debut and sounds a bit like Daft Punk’s mid-2000 flirtation with guitars. It might not fool the critics, or, like, an amoeba even, but it has got them a support slot on the upcoming Sleigh Bells tour and maybe even a semi-nostalgic, semi-zeitgeisty spot (albeit a small, cramped one that smells of cat litter) for Black Bananas, or whatever the fuck they’re called, in our stupid hearts.

Sub Pop defined the early 90s by launching grunge’s smack-stained flannel into the public consciousness and ‘Palaces aside, adhere to a strict policy of only signing guitar bands.

Are You… Can You… Were you? [Felt] is the latest track from last year’s much-acclaimed LP, Black Up, to get a slick music video and has enough rapidly flashing flower images to give bees a seizure. If the Shabazz boys keep crafting these silky smooth jams, Seattle might someday be known for something other than Nirvana, Starbucks, Frasier Crane and high suicide rates.

Didn’t we tell you that skate vids weren’t all just radness for your peepers? Sure, JUKE Vol. 01 was many baggies ago, long before your issues with repetitive thrash injury – but you got to hold on to these noggin nuggets! Yeah, back in our launch issue, we chatted up skate legend Ed Templeton on a ‘skate videos are a cool way to seed new music’ tip. And, we also interviewed Sonic Youth’s Thurston and Kim (RIP marriage!) twice in one day (and she broke a Gareth Pugh shoe on the shoot somehow and we had to be cool about it). But where was the connection? In the universe, that’s where.Because now, this awesome documentary thing comes along and mashes Thurston and skateboards up together like some sort of avant-gardrail gastropub experiment. It’s really sweet hearing how all the scenes are connected and how everyone got introduced to one another as Thurston takes the floor in this video and ollies his words across some important groundshifts in skateboarding soundtracks and then Ed Templeton’s all like, yeah totally. Anyways, promise we’re not like, feeding you Werther’s and dribbling out “I told you so”s through sickening gummy smiles. But you know, well, we kinda are. SKATEBOARDING SOUNDTRACKS ARE COOL AND HAVE BETTER MUSIC THAN MOST BARS. We told you so.

Thanks to our old JUKE bro and skate nerd Justin Mulcahy for most of these words (and a lot of other words that made us pass out and vom simultaneously).

BOYS TO MEN? Brooklyn’s premier DIY iconoclasts, The Men, have a tendency to jump genres with the eclecticism of a Ritalin-deprived child but their music was always unified by pure rage. On the title track to their forth-coming album, Open Your Heart, we catch a glimpse of their gentler side and we’re not sure what to think…

If their last album was Minor Threat, this one’s more Fugazi. Great – but it doesn’t make us want to toe-punt strangers’ groins and bite their ears off as they writhe in agony. Their evolution’s starting to mimic the original hardcore timeline. (Let’s hope the next step isn’t guyliner and skinny jeans…)

KU KLUX GLAM: Ariel’s off on one

Psych-pop heavyweights Ariel Pink (our JUKE Vol.03 cover star) and R. Stevie Moore have already achieved neo-luddite, lo-fi mastery and now seem increasingly concerned with subliminal right-wing rhetoric. Releasing the latest cut from their Ku Klux Glam project, SteviePink JavaScript, on 88 limited-edition 7” copies caught our attention like marching jackboots and made us a little worried for their state of mind.

Maybe wearing tinfoil hats and scanning Lady Gaga videos for illuminati symbolism put us on edge, but 88 is a numerated national socialist salutation to that notorious goose-stepping Austrian Führer (‘H’ is the 8th letter of the alphabet). Quick, buy a copy and play it backwards!

AZALEA VS AZEALIA (kinda)

Australian-born Iggy only moved to America five years ago and already sounds more ghetto than the cheeseburger peddling crackhead in Menace II Society. But thugging’s tough – and after 2k11’s femcee deluge, Iggy Azalea has entered a competitive market.

Rumour has it Def Jam are thinking about taking a punt on her, but to insure their investment they’ve appointed A$AP Rocky as her celebrity boo, possibly so that, at some point in the dead-eyed organ grinding, some hype-herpes might rub off on their dubious acquisition.

In her slo-mo ode to forbidden love, The Last Song, she avoids the blatantly Azealia Banks-inspired double-time, highly-sexed rhymes from past output. But still, the myriad of parallels – you know, like having almost the exact same name – suggest that Ms Azalea is shaping up to be Banks’s…least worrying threat.

A.Hop from A.Chal.

Keeping with 2011’s trend of the anti-celeb, A. Chal is the latest faceless, hype-shy tastemaker to speak only in twitterised haiku and live on an ironically titled tumblr. Having dropped numerous codeine-slurred edits of Drake, Radiohead and Kanye West among others in the past, Roses On Your Silhouette is his first original effort.

Unfortunately for Ale-ale-jandro Chal, his homies at hip-hop collective GFCnewyork outed him as their long-time producer, Precize. He’s also a music director in the high fashion netherworld, having worked for Ralph Lauren and Nicole Farhi. With that sort of resume you’d think he’d have a mouth to rival Ye’s. But no… all we can hear is this sweetass track. Go hip-hop.
